VoiceMap prices are the euro prices displayed during checking; exact sterling checkout prices remain unverified. Lengths are providers’ advertised timings, not measured audio totals. Matthews’s page gives 120 minutes in its header and 90 in its description; it also lists both 2.2 miles and 4 km. Allow two hours and check its route.

Walking with someone?

London Walks costs £40 for two, £60 for three or £80 for four full-price adults. Its listing also offers student, senior and child rates. This is a live guided experience, so the higher cost buys conversation and interpretation in person.

VoiceMap gives 15% off 2–20 copies through “Buy for a Group”, distributing a separate access code to each listener. We found no documented leader-controlled, synchronised playback feature. Group purchase terms ↗

Cobble’s shared Collection offer totals £2.98 / £3.97 / £4.96 for two / three / four new pass holders. Collections are included in CobbleGo. These are advertised-price calculations; Together remains beta. How Cobble access works

What the formats change

VoiceMap offers GPS playback, offline routes, pausing, repeat listening and virtual playback from home. Those are useful options if you want an established route and an independent guide’s perspective.

Cobble’s particular appeal is the ability to select short neighbourhood stories alongside its complete Walks. Collections suit changing plans; Together adds a shared listening option.

London Walks normally lists Tuesdays, 2–4pm, with monthly winter departures. Check your date and meeting point ↗

Who is behind the history?

Formal study, published research and years of guiding bring different strengths. The documented backgrounds are:

ContributorDocumented experience
Claire Annandale · Cobble ↗Credited historian on both Cobble Walks above. Master’s in Modern History from King’s College London, with two departmental prizes; first-class York degree. The Walk pages separately credit writers, editors and performers.
Brian Cookson · VoiceMap ↗Blue Badge guide and London-history author. Oxford BA in Russian and German. Books include London Waterside Walks and Crossing the River; long experience guiding at the Wallace Collection.
Steve Matthews · VoiceMap ↗London guide since 2010 and independent local-history researcher working with maps and archives. His public biography does not specify an academic qualification.
Paul French · VoiceMap ↗Independent historian, principally of modern China; Glasgow MPhil in economics. His Midnight in Peking won an Edgar Award. He also contributed to Chiang Yee and His Circle ↗, about Chinese cultural life in Britain.

These biographies do not establish a PhD for any of the four contributors. An unlisted credential does not prove its absence. Qualifications alone do not establish which tour is best researched; this is a listing comparison, not a comparative listening or script audit.

Start without spending.

London Parks & Gardens provides free downloadable audio, a map and written directions. Choose a few squares and check current garden access. Cobble’s Joe Orton & Queer 60s London Collection is also marked free, with full listening in the app.
